Sandwell Academy crowned ESFA PlayStation®Schools’ Cup Champions 2017
Sandwell Academy from West Bromwich took centre stage on Monday, as they took part in the English Schools’ FA PlayStation®Schools’ Cup Final against Nene Park Academy from Peterborough. The Under 15 Boys Final was due to be played at Derby County Football Club the previous week; however, that game was postponed, due to a waterlogged pitch. The re-arranged final took place on Monday 22nd May at The Hawthorns, home of West Bromwich Albion FC.
Sandwell Academy were determined to win the National trophy for only the second time in the Academy’s history and they got off to a fantastic start; taking the lead 2-0 at half time. In the second half Nene Park Academy showed why they were worthy National Cup finalists as they fought back to level the game 2-2 and take the game to extra- time. In extra time, it was Sandwell Academy, who stepped up and showed their quality to break through the Nene Park Academy defence twice to win the game 4-2 and deservedly win the National Cup.
Sandwell Academy PE Teacher Mr Mosedale said, “This was a fantastic occasion not only for the boys taking part but the whole school. Sandwell last won an ESFA National Cup in 2012, so it is great that we have been able to add to this tally. This group of boys won the FA Peoples Cup 12 months ago and we always planned for them to have a big run in the National Cup this year. “
Headteacher Mr Topper added, “It was fantastic that we were able to bring the whole Academy to the Hawthorns to watch the game. When the game was close during extra time the enthusiastic encouragement of our students and staff in the stands spurred the boys on to victory. We are all extremely proud of the lads; a truly wonderful achievement!!”
