About the Curriculum

Curriculum Organisation

The curriculum is divided into 10 modules throughout each Key Stage. Each module is 3 to 4 weeks long and will provide opportunities for short term targets which allow students to focus on improving standards. Each module is assessed, with students and parents receiving a report on progress. Most subjects are taught in 3 hour sessions with the exception of Modern Foreign Languages and Physical Education which deliver 11⁄2 hour sessions. There is a ten session week for all students. The maximum class size will be 26.

ICT

There is a state of the art ICT infrastructure and the entire curriculum is available online for students, staff and parents. Interactive electronic whiteboards are installed in every teaching venue to provide the most up to date facility for teaching and learning.

Students using ICT Facilities

Year 7 The National Curriculum is delivered to all students. Subject areas include: English, Performing, Arts, Mathematics, Physical Education, Science, Business Studies, Technology, ICT, Humanities, Modern Foreign Languages.

In addition Religious Education, Personal, Social, Health and Sex Education and Citizenship are delivered as part of the entitlement curriculum.

Learning and Teaching
The teaching methodology is wide ranging, including traditional methods, investigative work, group work, independent work, and team teaching. However, modern technology underpins the learning environment with state of the art Information Communication Technology facilities easily accessible to all teachers and students.

Homework
Students are set homework each session in accordance with the Academy’s Homework Policy. Parents are encouraged to support their child with managing their homework timetable.

Sixth Form
Sandwell Academy has developed a curriculum model which offers considerable breadth for students through a range of vocational and academic courses catering for all abilities. The Careers and Industry team provides information for students on the opportunities available to them on completing their courses. These range from the world of work, work based training and Higher and Further

Education opportunities.
Close working relationships are being established with industry and work placements of 3 weeks duration are part of the Sixth Form entitlement. Applied General Certificate of Education.

Students using Workshop facilities.

The Academy is a school that admits students from across the whole range of ability. Students with special needs and disabilities are offered maximum access to the curriculum through the focused use of ICT. The building has been designed to provide excellent access to facilities for disabled pupils. Individualised support is provided for students with special requirements. This includes express groups for gifted and talented students.
