A group of 16 Year 10 students had the opportunity to participate in a Mathematics Quiz held by the Raise Programme at the University of Birmingham. There were over 300 students from 30 local schools competing in the challenge. The competition itself consisted of five rounds, - ‘Thinking Outside the Box’ with match stick puzzles, Applying University Mathematics, two Mathematics rounds and the final specialist round on Florence Nightingale.

On arrival the students were separated into four teams, one of which succeeded in reaching the final, and were up against four other local schools fighting for first place. The four finalists received a tie breaker question, where Sandwell Academy took first place. Well done to all the students who took part in the event.

A Year 10 student commented:

“The day was insightful and enjoyable for all those who attended and included a tour of the campus and a taste of University life. We also gained confidence, communication and teamwork skills from the activities”
