Peer Mentoring Programme

Mon, 26 Mar 2018

30 Sixth Form students volunteered to become peer mentors for the incoming Year 7 students from November 2017 to March 2018. The aim of the programme was to support the new students with their transition into the Academy. The Mentors were required to complete an induction which included topics on understanding and awareness of confidentiality, safeguarding, types of abuse and skills and qualities of a mentor. The Mentors met with the Year 7 students once a week to discuss all manner of topics, including Academy life, core subjects, and friendship groups. The mentoring programme allowed the Year 7 students to engage and communicate effectively with each other. The Year 7 students worked together and used their initiative to build confidence, resilience and support for each other. The Sixth Form Mentors then completed their work books so that they were able to monitor progress. On completion of the programme they received a certificate and an acknowledgement letter for their portfolios.

Year 7 Student E.B

“I liked doing a Presentation on Birds in my mentoring session because I got to express my knowledge about them. I wish we had more time to talk about other animals. Overall, I enjoyed the sessions with my Sixth form Mentor.”

Sixth form mentor S.G

“I think it is important for younger years to have support with any school related issues or issues that affect school life, as it can sometimes be intimidating to ask or talk to teachers”.
