International Cricket Star Visits Sandwell Academy

Mon, 26 Jun 2017

On Friday 23 June the Academy was fortunate enough to receive a visit from International Cricketer Chris Woakes (England and the Birmingham Bears) who dropped in to spend some time with a lucky group of Year 9 GCSE PE students.

His brother David Woakes, who has been acting as the Business Enterprise Advisor at the Academy for the past two years, took the opportunity to organise the visit given Chris has been suffering from an injury which has side-lined him from the busy summer schedule.

The student’s asked Chris a number of questions surrounding their recent GCSE topics. Chris was quizzed on his diet, training and how he is recovering from his recent injury. The students were then lucky enough to have their pictures taken with Chris and went away with a signed photo. This proved to be a great experience for our GCSE students and should be extremely useful to their studies.

Head, Simon Topper commented, “What a wonderful treat for students and staff to get the opportunity to meet one of the current stars of English cricket. It was great to see him engage so willingly with our students and brilliant to see a local hero working so enthusiastically with young people. We all wish Chris well with his return from injury and hope to see him back in action in the near future”
