The SSCo role within Sandwell Academy

Miss Emma Davies
Emma Davies

The School Sports co-ordinator (SSCo) takes on a number of roles and responsibilities within the Academy. The main role is to work alongside the local Primary schools to increase sports participation and provide competitive opportunities for primary pupils from within the Sandwell area.  The Academy hosts a number of tournaments for the primary schools to enter throughout the year. Medals are provided for the winning teams and certificates for all who take part. Pictures are taken and displayed on boards throughout the Academy and also in a Sandwell newsletter produced by the local Primary Development manager (PDM). These sporting events encourage greater participation at a young age which hopefully will be maintained throughout their lives and also increases self confidence through social interaction.

Photos of previous students will be available soon.

The SSCo role also incorporates taking responsibility for encouraging students from the Academy to assist in coaching and officiating capacities. This offers opportunities for greater responsibility and leadership experience.  This makes it easier for Primary pupils to make the transition to secondary education and helps the Academy students to gain confidence. The Academy runs the Governments’ ‘Step into Sport’ initiative which allows a select number of students to enjoy this experience.  We also currently have a ‘Young Ambassador’ who represents the Academy in then passing on good practice to other students from the local area. There are also opportunities for younger students to experience leadership through their physical education lessons.  All Year 7 students at the Academy currently undertake an 8-Week ‘Young Leaders Award’ whereby they learn to deliver a safe and enjoyable session to their peers. This experience prepares students for the challenges of life and gives them the opportunity to pursue physical activity through another role rather than just as a performer.  The SSCo role should encourage all students to participate and achieve in sport regardless of whether their role is as a coach, official or performer.
